El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
There is no question that I am a movie person as opposed to a television person. I like being able to sit through an entire story in one go, and not have to break it up into 30 minute segments. I often get impatient with TV shows with the exception of a few series that I love, Breaking Bad being one of them. I cannot give enough praise to this show, it’s incredible, every episode is like a movie in itself. In my opinion, Breaking Bad is the greatest show to ever exist because of the rich story, complex characters, gorgeous cinematography, and most importantly, the incredible ending. I have never seen a television show with an ending as satisfying as Breaking Bad, I finished the series with my questions answered and was left with the satisfaction that I had just watched something immaculate. Because of how much I enjoyed the ending of the series, when Netflix announced that there would be a movie that served as a sequel and epilogue to the show, I was very skeptical. I didn’t want some spinoff movie to ruin the greatness of the entire series, and to my surprise, it absolutely did not.
The “Breaking Bad spinoff movie” is actually called El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. It was released in 2019 and is a Netflix original. Written and directed by Vince Gilligan, the head writer, creator, and executive producer of Breaking Bad, the movie feels almost like a long episode of the original show. If you haven’t seen Breaking Bad, you won’t be able to understand El Camino whatsoever. This movie is for the fans and for the fans only.
El Camino is a continuation of Jesse Pinkman’s story right where the show’s season finale left off. In the season finale Felina (season 5, episode 16), we’re left knowing what happens to Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul). Walter ends up bleeding to death in a meth lab while Jesse breaks free from the white supremacists who were holding him captive as a meth cook. The last we see of Jesse in show is him crying tears of joy as he rides away from the place of his enslavement, and that’s right where we pick up in El Camino.
There’s no quick way to summarize this movie without summarising the other five seasons of Bad, but I can say that Gilligan does a wonderful job of including every single important detail from the show into the movie. El Camino is a great final chapter to the Breaking Bad saga and if your a Breaking Bad fan, it’s 100% worth the watch. Stream it on Netflix only!
